Star Birds

Journey through 5 levels of scale ranging from molecular to mountain to clean up the aftermath of a lab test gone slightly wrong (emphasis on slightly!). Scanning and scaling your way through the environment, you’ll learn about the different rules that apply to each realm, and have to deal with giant ants, fungi &amp; tardigrades taking over the city. On your adventure, you’ll be joined by STEVE, the lab’s AI assistant, and will be the first to try out his newest invention, Shrink-o-gen.

The world needs your help after a lab experiment went wrong! Giant ants, a protist, and fungi are taking over the city! Humanity relies on you and your AI assistant STEVE to bring everything back to normal! Immerse yourself in the worlds within worlds that surround us every day, but usually go unnoticed by the human eye – all in the iconic kurzgesagt style. Throughout 4 missions, you’ll learn about the concept of scales and the different rules that apply to different size-based realms – from molecular and bacterial to the insect, human, and even mountain-sized world!&nbsp;But wait, there’s more! Just like our videos, interactive projects start with a research deep dive. Whether we are working on an app or a game, our first question will always be: What kind of story do we want to tell and what are the special benefits of our chosen medium to make the facts exciting?

Colors and shapes help to bring our concepts into the real world. Through an intense process of sketches, mockups, layout and illustrations we work towards a design that can go through beta-testing and then be polished into a final design.

Other than our videos and print products, interactive projects are dynamic and like an organism that needs to be kept alive. We watch out for our interactive content once we released it into the wild to make sure everything is working properly.

Videos are how we started, and interactive products are what we’re exploring going forward.&nbsp;While the idea to bring our birds and storytelling to the world of gaming has been around for a long time, the more we researched, the more we understood that - well, it’s complicated. But we believe that it’s worth going through the trouble.&nbsp;Interactive media, and video games specifically, offer us the opportunity to not only explain the universe we live in but give players the chance to dive head first into worlds of our own creation.&nbsp;And nothing - from an atom to the largest black hole in outer space - is boring if you make it fun to experience and explore.&nbsp;

We here at kurzgesagt are fascinated by black holes – so we created this very special plushie to honor them. Turn it over to reveal a white hole, the theoretical counterpart to our favorite celestial object. This two-sided black and white hole plushie is made with an ultra-soft fleece and squishy insides. May it inspire a new generation of astrophysicists.

We release the kurzgesagt calendar every year – and it is pretty special because we add 10,000 years to the regular calendar to include all of humanity. We chose a new year zero 12,000 years ago when humans first started working together on a larger scale. A much better representation of how far our species has come! We also make it as pretty as possible every time.

The Human Era Calendar

Kurzgesagt products are ideated and researched with the same level of care and attention to detail as our videos. Sometimes we'll take a clever idea and turn it into a plushie – other times we'll take many, many hours to research a poster or journal. Always ensuring that they are not only scientifically accurate but also fun and engaging.

Our product ideas are then brought to life. We create sketches, mockups, layouts and illustrations aiming to make the topic as easily accessible as possible. We want to create something that you'll love to bring into your home and that will inspire you every day.

Once the design is finalized, we move on to production, where we carefully choose materials and oversee the manufacturing process to ensure the highest quality possible. Our products often go through a long sampling process and many iterations until we are happy with the result.

We then look for the best possible story to tell about our products and turn it into a campaign. We take pictures and film the product in action at our Munich office. We are then ready to put the products on the kurzgesagt shop and release them into the wild.

When our posters, journals or plushies arrive at your home, then the best part of the product process begins. You get to live your life literally surrounded by science. We love being part of your everyday life and sparking your curiosity for space, biology, nature and life itself.

Our products like infographic posters, journals and science-inspired accessories are created with love and attention to detail. We apply the highest standards in design and production quality to create aesthetic products with an optimistic outlook.

We feel overwhelmed in the face of rapid climate change. It seems simple on the surface. Greenhouse gases trap energy from the Sun and transfer it to our atmosphere. So why don’t we just like… prevent all of that? Well, it’s complicated.

Everybody feels lonely sometimes. But only few of us are aware how important this feeling was for our ancestors - and that our modern world can turn it into something that really hurts us. Why do we feel this way and what can we do about it?

Loneliness

All our videos start with a deep dive on the topic: we read books and primary sources like research papers to lay a scientific foundation for the script. We always consult with experts in the field to make sure our facts are straight. The last step is preparing a sourcesheet for each video to prove our claims and make our process transparent.

Our scripts are the backbone of our videos. For each one we try to find the perfect balance between telling facts and shaping them into a captivating story. This can take about a dozen drafts to cut away unnecessary bit and polish the final result. The ultimate goal is to offer a new perspective on a topic and leave viewers with new insights – without them really noticing.

After deliberating over the best visual metaphors and ideas for each scene in the sketching phase, the illustration process begins. We use masterful vector illustration, pixel-based illustration and infographics to create our distinctive playful style. Our trademark are quirky and relatable characters – if you can't sympathize with our mitochondria and brown dwarfs, we don't know what else will melt your heart.

Steve is the voice of Kurzgesagt and he narrates every video in his signature tone that blends rationality and optimism. His voiceover provides the timing for the animation team, who bring scenes and characters to life through meticulous handiwork. We combine classic 2D flat animation with 3D  elements – whatever is needed to make our puppets dance and planets turn.

Each Kurzgesagt gets its own specifically composed soundtrack from Epic Mountain music to give it a unique mood and emotional impact. You wouldn’t guess what a difference this step makes if you haven’t heard a video without their music and sfx.

We specialize in explaining complex topics in an approachable and holistic way. Our videos are based on rigorous research and use vibrant and fun vector illustrations and animation to transport impactful messages.
